Plastic Surgery Statistics
Trends in the popularity of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures are documented yearly by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Unfortunately, there is not a Canadian equivalent for this data. Still, the ASPS data in 2017 offers important insight into cosmetic procedure trends in both Canada and the United States.
The Landings Surgical Centre, located in Halifax, NS, would like to provide you with plastic surgery statistics, including those on breast augmentation and reduction. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, the information below can offer context to your decision-making process.
Top Trends in Plastic Surgeries and Minimally-invasive Procedures
Here is one interesting take-away from the 2017 data: all of the top five minimally-invasive procedures were for the face, while three of the top five surgical procedures focused on the body.
Overall, there was slightly more growth from 2016 to 2017 in minimally-invasive procedures, compared to surgical procedures.
In 2017, there were almost 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed. The top 5 procedures were:
- Breast augmentation
- Liposuction
- Rhinoplasty
- Eyelift
- Tummy tuck
About 15.7 million cosmetic minimally-invasive treatments were performed last year. The top five in this category were:
- BOTOX® Cosmetic
- Dermal fillers
- Chemical peel
- Laser hair removal
- Microdermabrasion
The Continual Rise in Breast Augmentation Procedures
Breast augmentation is consistently one of the top, if not the top, cosmetic surgical procedure performed each year. In 2017, there were 300,378 breast augmentations performed. This represents a 3 percent increase over 2016.
Taking a longer view, the number of breast augmentations performed jumped by an astounding 41 percent from 2000 to 2017.
A Sudden Jump in Breast Reductions
Breast reduction affords patients cosmetic and functional benefits. Women frequently report that aches, pains, and other physical ailments are relieved following a breast reduction procedure. In addition, they feel that they look better.
It may be for this consistently high patient satisfaction that 2017 saw an 11 percent spike in breast reductions over 2016.
Eliminating Unwanted Fat: Surgical and Non-surgical Options
With almost 250,000 liposuction procedures performed in 2017, this cosmetic therapy remains one of the most sought-after ways for a surgeon to sculpt the body. However, non-invasive methods to reduce or eliminate unwanted fat are becoming increasingly popular, including treatments that involve:
- Freezing fat
- Applying infrared light
- Using radio frequency
- Tightening the skin
Of these, cellulite treatments increased almost 20 percent over the previous year. It should be noted that non-invasive fat elimination and redistribution options sometimes serve as a lasting solution. Other times, these modalities meet a patient’s immediate goals, and surgical fat removal is sought at a later time.
