What Is the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation Incision Technique?
At The Landings Surgical Centre, we have built the reputation of our plastic surgery practice on customizing every procedure we perform to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual patient. No plastic surgery procedure available at our practice is more customizable than breast augmentation. Breast augmentation patients have some measure of control over virtually every aspect of the surgery, from whether the implants are placed behind or in front of the breast muscles to the profile of the implant.
Patients even have some say over where the surgical incisions are made, which is unusual in any type of surgery. While not all patients will be good candidates for every type of incision, most patients will have more than one option at their disposal. And for many patients, the incision of choice is the transaxillary incision. Board-certified plastic surgeons Richard Bendor-Samuel and Louis Boileau perform breast augmentation using the full range of modern incision techniques, including the transaxillary breast augmentation incision. At our Halifax, NS plastic surgery practice, the transaxillary incision technique is one of the most popular among our patients, and for good reason.

What Is the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation Incision Technique?
“Transaxillary” is basically a clinical term for underarm, or armpit. Therefore, the transaxillary breast augmentation incision technique involves making the incision in the natural fold located in the armpit.
Many patients are initially shocked to learn that breast implants can be placed through the armpits. However, if you look down at your armpits and your breasts, you’ll notice just how proximate they are to each other. Both saline and silicone breast implants can be placed through the transaxillary incision, and the implants can be placed either in front of or behind the pectoralis muscle. However, the technique is particularly well suited for the placement of empty saline implants behind the pectoralis muscle. Once in place, the empty implant shells can be filled very easily.
Breast augmentation using the transaxillary incision technique is performed using an endoscope, a tiny camera that is inserted through the incision so that it can project real-time, high-definition images of the work being done onto a screen. This gives our plastic surgeons exceptional control over the procedure.
The benefits of the technique include no visible scarring in the breast region and little risk of damage to the mammary glands. There is a very slight risk of nerve damage, which could result in numbness in the arms or hands; however, this occurs very rarely, especially when the procedure is performed endoscopically.
Not all plastic surgeons are skilled in performing breast augmentation using the transaxillary incision technique. You should trust your breast augmentation to plastic surgeons that have demonstrated records of success using the full range of incision techniques, such as Drs. Bendor-Samuel and Boileau.
