Breast Lift Recovery: What Can You Expect? By The Landings Surgical Centre on June 23, 2015

Woman wearing a tan braAging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and congenital conditions can cause ptosis, or sagging, pendulous breasts. At the Landings Surgical Centre, our experienced doctors can restore a more youthful appearance with breast lift surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau can raise and reshape your breast tissue to give you a more attractive, perky shape. However, to achieve the best possible outcome from surgery, patients should follow all post-operative instructions. Following your doctor’s instructions can help ensure that your breasts look attractive and revitalized after your procedure. In this blog post, we review what you can expect during your breast lift recovery period. To learn more, contact our Nova Scotia plastic surgery practice today.

What Happens during a Breast Lift?

Each woman has different cosmetic goals and breast shape, so our plastic surgeons will customize your surgery to your particular needs and wishes. Generally, during a breast lift procedure, the surgeon will make an incision around your areola, vertically down the lower half of the breast, and across the crease, creating an anchor shape. Next, the surgeon will excise excess fat, skin, and tissue. Your doctor will then reposition the nipple and areola to create a more youthful appearance.

Recovery Timeline

The length of your healing period will depend on the amount of surgical modification required. The following serves as a general expected recovery timeline:

  • Directly following your breast lift surgery, our staff will provide you with a compression bra to reduce swelling and help your breasts maintain their shape. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home so you can rest. You may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for about two weeks after surgery.
  • Two weeks after your procedure, you should be able to return to work and most routine activities.
  • One month after your breast lift, you should be able to resume your regular exercise routine.
  • Six weeks after your surgery, you may stop wearing your compression bra if you are sufficiently healed.
  • Three months after your breast lift procedure, you should be fully recovered and able to fully enjoy your new appearance.

Tips for Healthy Healing

Patients who undergo breast lift surgery must be willing to take part in the recovery process. To achieve good results, you should:

  • Follow Dr. Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Boileau’s post-surgical guidelines
  • Make arrangements ahead of time to take time off work, and have a family member or friend help out with household chores so you can focus on your recovery
  • Wear your compression bra as directed
  • Stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet
  • Avoid engaging in overly strenuous activity
  • Do not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, as these habits can delay healing
  • Maintain a positive attitude about your healing and results
