- Transaxillary: This incision is made under the arm. An endoscope, which is a lighted camera, is then inserted through the incision, traveling to the chest area to make a breast pocket. In most cases, this incisional approach is used when patients are having saline breast implants placed. One of the major advantages is that there is no visible scar created.
- Periarealor: This is the most concealed type of incision, because the incision is made around the areola, an area that camouflages the resulting scar. Since this approach involves an incision near the nerves and milk ducts, it increases the risk of breastfeeding problems and loss of nipple sensation.
- Inframammary: This incision is the most common and is made directly beneath the fold of your breast. This approach is not as concealed as other incision options, but provides the surgeon greater control over creation of the implant pocket and implant placement.
- Transumbilical: This incision is made in the umbilical channel or belly button. It is a newer and highly specialized procedure that should only be completed by a surgeon who is skilled in this technique. Saline implants can be used in this technique, but pre-filled silicone implants can’t be placed via the transumbilical approach.
It is important for breast augmentation patients to maintain realistic expectations throughout the procedure. The best candidates are those who are looking for an improvement, not perfection.
