Liposuction and Fat Transfer

It can be very frustrating to be within your ideal weight range, but still be faced with pockets of stubborn fat that do not go away with exercise and proper nutrition. There are also those areas of the body where you would like to have a little extra fat. At The Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, we understand that these aesthetic concerns can result in embarrassment and discontent for our patients in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Plastic surgeons Richard Bendor-Samuel and Louis Boileau offer liposuction and fat transfer to eliminate pockets of fat and contour the body.

Liposuction

For our patients in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, liposuction is not a weight loss solution, but it is an option for patients who are within their ideal weight range but still have deposits of fat that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise. At our practice, tumescent liposuction is our most commonly used technique. During this procedure, a fluid containing anesthetic and saline is injected into the skin to loosen up fat and minimize bleeding and other surgical complications. After the fluid is injected, our surgeons insert a small cannula, or suction tube, into a small incision to remove fat deposits. We also offer ultrasonic liposuction at our practice. During this procedure, a cannula is inserted into a small incision near the area to be treated. When the suction tube has been inserted, it vibrates at a high frequency to break up the fat deposits and make them easier to remove. Our surgeons will determine what technique is best for you based on your needs and the areas of the body to be treated. After undergoing liposuction, patients are happy to find their body more toned and contoured.

Fat Transfer

In some cases, it is not excess fat, but rather a lack of fat that is an area of concern for patients. At our practice, we offer fat transfer to remove fat from one area of the body and transfer it to another. This procedure is also known as fat grafting or lipografting and is a more natural alternative to cosmetic fillers. Fat grafting is available to treat and fill areas of the body such as the hands, buttocks, breasts and face. Our surgeons can use your own body fat to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, fill in deep creases in the face or hands, or increase the size of the buttocks or breasts. During this procedure, a cannula or syringe is used to remove fat from other areas of the body where excess fat cells are present. The fat that is removed is then purified to remove any excess liquid. This purified fat is then injected back into the body at the target areas, just as cosmetic filler would be. A fat transfer can offer patients a more shapely body and/or a more youthful appearance.
